The librarian will lead the discussion by asking various questions about what students know about how to create websites and waiting for oral responses. The school librarian will ask students what their favorite websites are and what about the website they like the best (colors, ease of access, overall appearance, user-friendliness, etc.). Students will orally respond to the question.
The librarian will pass out the following template:
The students will fill out the template based on what type of website they would like to make. The librarian will monitor the room as the students complete their planners. The librarian will remind students that the planner can help them know what their finished website will look like.
Instructional Days 2-5
The librarian will show the following video:
The librarian will pause the video occasionally to check for understanding and assess if the students are understanding the ideas presented in the video. Students will log in to Chromebooks or computers to access Google Suites.
The librarian will return the planners to the students to follow along as they create their own websites.
The librarian will instruct the students to create their website. The librarian will state that the website must have the following:
- A home page
- A contact information page
- A frequently asked questions page
- At least one video
- At least 5 pictures
*Days 2 through 5 will be spent with the students working on their individual websites and making edits as needed. The school librarian will be monitoring the process as they design their website and assist students. The school librarian will also remind the students to make sure their colors and fonts match the audience that they are targeting. The final page of the website will be a citation page for all the links to videos or other information the students acquired for their website.
Instructional Day 6
The school librarian will summarize the purpose of the camp and what the students learned during the camp. The school librarian will ask for students to present their website to the group and demonstrate how to navigate their web pages. Each student will orally present their website design and explain how to navigate the web page, the purpose of the website, the reason why they believe it's important, and any additional information needed.
Once every student participating in the camp presents their website, the school librarian will explain the types of skills website design can offer for student learning and future careers. The school librarian will thank all the students for participating in the camp and suggest that they tell their friends to join the camp for the following year.
The school librarian will give all the participating students a reward (such as a certificate of completion) at the end of the camp and dismiss the students.
