Graphics Conference
Contest Purposes/Payoff: Students will develop an understanding of how to create graphic novels and develop an understanding of how to develop plot lines for the story. The contest will promote the graphic novel section of the library and expose students to titles they may have heard of or learn more about graphic novels. This would be a great cross-curricular contest.
Promotional Materials:
- Flyers to be distributed to all classrooms and in the cafeteria during lunch times
- Large posters placed at locations with large traffic such as the cafeteria, hallways, gym, fine arts area, library, front entrance, etc.
- Google Form link shared with all teachers to post on Google Classroom/Remind and posted on the school website; Google Form can also be filled out on the campus library
- Promotional videos can be posted on Google Classroom and the school website
Flyer/Poster
Directions:
- Invite all students to join the annual Graphics Conference Contest
- Have a master copy of the comic strip template (paper)
- Provide flyers to be distributed on campus (for example: in the classroom, during lunch times)
- Post posters (same as flyers) in places with large traffic such as the cafeteria, gym, front entrance, etc.
- Ensure to make enough hard copies of the comic strip template based off of the number of entries (have extras set aside just in case)
- Collect all templates from students as they turn in their comic strip
- After the due date, a panel of judges will be invited to view all the entries and select the top 3 choices
- Students selected as the winners will have their comic strip published on the school website and get a signed copy of their favorite graphic novel
- Announce the winners during morning announcements or lunch times, you can also create a video with the students and their submissions
Materials Needed:
- Comic strip template (this can be created through Canva or make a simple one on Google Slides/Google Docs)
- Access to a printer to make multiple copies of the template
- Flyers
- Poster maker (to make the flyer into poster size)
- Signed copies of various graphic novels (use this opportunity for an author meet-and-greet or get an author visit from graphic novelists)
Judging:
- Invite all teachers and staff personnel to view the submissions and make a selection (the submissions will be narrowed down to the top 10 choices from the first selection)
- Invite department chairs and administration to view the top ten choices and select the top 3 winners
- Instruct judges panel to look for originality, creativity, and interesting storylines
Prizes:
- Top 3 winners will get a signed copy of their favorite graphic novel
- Selected comic strips will be published on the school website and created into poster size to display in the library for other students to view. This can help promote the contest for the following year
